Beyonders are a multi-genre organic/electronic collective. Originally the brainchild of drum ‘n’ bass pioneers Jason and Mark Goodings, Hidden Agenda. The duo stood at the forefront of the UK underground music scene from the mid to late nineties. Signed to Goldie’s Metalheadz, Hidden Agenda successfully fused jazz and funk rhythms within a breakbeat and drum ‘n’ bass context with a string of iconic pressings including the highly regarded Dispatch trilogy.
The releases which followed on Creative Source, Reinforced and Zest were consistently innovative. Marked by a refusal to be constrained within the blueprint which they helped create. The evolution of the brothers’ sound can be traced through subsequent solo releases. This sense of progression and experimentation was a constant, leading to the genesis of ‘The Beyonders’ project. The vision remained unrealised at the time of Mark’s premature passing in 2016.
2021 sees the resurrection of the project in which Jason ‘NOS’ collaborates with James Hadfield and Mal Sharp. Hadfield (Elizabeth Collective, Lizards) is an accomplished DJ and producer who uses eclectic sampling and unorthodox field recordings to create soulful electronic symphonies. His releases as one-half of Lizards (Futureboogie, Leng) and multiple solo releases demonstrate his ability to straddle genres. The collective is bolstered by the addition of multi-instrumentalist Mal Sharp. As one-third of production trio, Craggz and Parallel Forces he had releases on Valve Records, Product and Aspect. Mal has also appeared on many of James Hadfield’s projects.
The ethos of Beyonders is beyond genre. The result is a confidently layered, beat-driven, production trio. As accomplished DJs, you never quite know what to expect other than a diversely creative selection. 2021 see Beyonders dropping a full-length album and releases on Reinforced & Co-Operation in the pipeline.
